Common Reasons for a Car Key Replacement

There are several situations where you might need a car key replacement, and most of them happen when you least expect it. Here are some of the most common reasons:

  • Lost or stolen car keys: One of the most frequent reasons for needing a replacement is simply misplacing your car keys or having them stolen. In either case, it’s important to replace the key quickly.
  • Snapped or damaged keys: Car keys can snap, crack, or wear out over time—especially older or frequently used keys. If your key is bent, chipped, or no longer turns in the ignition, a replacement is usually the best option.
  • Keys that have stopped working: Water damage, cracked casings or chipped blades can all cause your key to stop working

If you need a new car key, give us a call on 0808 164 2928 and we will get you back on the road in no time!

What You’ll Need for a Car Key Replacement

Theres a couple of things that you need for one of our auto locksmiths to replace your key. You’ll need to let us know the make, model and year of your vehicle, the VIN number and proof of ownership, such as the V5.

The time it will take for our auto locksmith to replace your key will depend on the make, model and age of your car. A traditional key with no chip, will take around 10-30 minutes. A transponder key, with a chip inside is more complicated and will take a bit longer, around 30-60 minutes.

Yes, you can replace a car key without the original. To do this our auto locksmith would need the VIN number and proof of ownership. The auto locksmith will use the VIN number to access the cars key code and cut you a new car key.

It can be, you will have to check with your individual insurance and policy. Some fully comp policies do cover car key replacement, while other insurance companies offer it as an optional add on.

Our auto locksmiths can replace your car key battery for you and make sure that its all-in working order.

Many modern vehicles are equipped with Category 2 immobilisers or higher, which use encrypted transponder keys. These advanced keys must meet strict insurance and anti-theft standards, making them more secure—but also more expensive to replace.

Keyless entry fobs and smart keys contain microchips and require specialist programming that can’t be done with basic equipment. Our locksmiths carry advanced diagnostic machines in their vans to handle this type of work. As a result, reprogramming these keys can be more costly than standard replacements.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly solution, a universal car key may be an option. These keys are not branded and follow a more generic design, making them a cheaper alternative while still providing basic functionality.
