Locks Changed

You may need or want to get your locks changed for a variety of reasons, whether it’s because of an emergency situation such as after a burglary or if you have moved into a new property and require new locks to be installed. Keytek® Locksmiths offers both an emergency Locksmith service and the option to book in advance for lock change.

Calling out Keytek® Locksmiths for a Lock Change

No matter the reason for a lock change, you’ll want to be sure that you are using a local Locksmith that is fully trained and trustworthy. At Keytek® all of our local Locksmiths are DBS (formally CRB) checked and are regularly monitored by us, so you can trust you are getting the best service possible when you need a lock change.

As part of the lock changing service offered by us at Keytek® Locksmiths we  carry out a free home security check. This will involve the Locksmith taking a look at your current security measures and giving you recommendations on how you can keep your home more secure, whilst also checking that your locks and other security measures comply with your home insurance regulations.

When to Get Your Locks Changed

Old and Rusty

If your locks are particularly old, it might be time to replace them. A standard lock with proper care and maintenance could see you through several years but as wear and tear take their hold the effectiveness of your lock will begin to weaken eventually. Even if your locks are in good working order right now, it’s always wise to consider getting them updated to not only keep your home safe from potential intruders but to also minimise the risk of them breaking and leaving you stuck!

There’s Visible Damage

A pretty obvious indication that a door lock might need to be replaced is if it has visible damage or isn’t working correctly. A lock should be easy to use and operate, feeling smooth and stable. If your lock has damage, is feeling clunky, wobbly, or generally is difficult to use it’s usually a good sign that it needs to be replaced. Or at the very least looked at!

Even if the lock is still working, damage to the lock can lead to the higher risk of breaking potentially leaving you locked out, unable to secure your home and even at risk of becoming a target.

We suggest calling out your local Locksmith to come and look at your lock, just to be on the safe side. It could also be an excellent opportunity to improve the general security of your property by installing higher security locks and hardware! Find out more about Locksmith services here!

Lost your Keys

If you’ve lost or forgot your keys somewhere, you never know who might pick them up which can leave your home vulnerable so we always suggest changing your locks if your keys are lost.

Unfortunately, there isn’t really anything you can do when your keys are lost other than, tracing your steps and reporting them lost to the police on a non-emergency line, but what you can do is ensure that your home is secure is to change your locks.

Get advice on what to do when you lose your keys here.

You’ve had a Break In

Doors are usually the prime target for burglars with 75% of burglars gaining access through a door in 2021. So should the worst happen, it’s so important that you change your locks after you have been burgled.

Not only could your locks have been damaged in the attack but it can also mean that your locks weren’t up to scratch security wise. There is unfortunately no sure-fire way to stop a burglary but different locks can come with different security features, making your home more secure and protected against attack. Likewise, it’s not uncommon for burglars to return to a home they have already targeted with the assumption they will be able to get in again, so it’s even more important that you change your locks to protect your home!

You’ve Moved into a New Home

Moving is an exciting (if not slightly stressful) experience where thoughts on décor and getting the Wi-Fi set up are usually top of the list. However, it’s also important to take a moment to think about changing the locks.

Even if the locks are in working order, you never know who might have a key and what their intentions could be. It’s possible that the previous owners still have a spare key somewhere, have given duplicates to children, friends, or neighbours or might even have lost a few.

We always advise that one of the first things you do in a new home is to change the locks. Calling out a local Locksmith to meet you on your move in day is a great way to protect your home, valuables, and family.

Other reasons:

  • If you don’t know how many people have a spare key.
  • If you are a landlord and have evicted tenants.
  • If you want to upgrade your home security

Whether your uPVC door lock is broken or just won’t open, we can help.

Changing the lock on a uPVC door is normally a straight forward job, which should take no more than an hour in the majority of cases. However, it is still recommended that you engage the services of a professional Locksmith to complete the work.

The majority of uPVC doors locks are euro cylinders, meaning that 9 times out of 10 a Keytek® Locksmith will have the uPVC door lock you need and can complete the job in just one visit. Wooden Door Lock Replacement

The most common type of door lock found on a wooden door, is a Mortice and/or a Yale lock (night latch). If your wooden door is of a good quality then these locks can be very secure.

Similar to a uPVC door lock, we here at Keytek® Locksmiths come out with a fully stocked van so in most cases we will have the lock you need when we come to replace your wooden door lock. The process of changing a lock on a wooden door should be very straight forward and a fully trained local Locksmith should be able to complete the job to an extremely high standard within a reasonable time.

Mortice Lock Replacement

Mortice locks can be found in the middle of a wooden door and are usually fitted inside the door, the most common types of mortice locks are a mortice sash lock and a mortice deadlock. We can supply and replace:

  • 2 Lever mortice sash lock
  • 3 Lever mortice sash lock
  • 5 lever mortice sash lock
  • 2 Lever mortice dead lock
  • 3 Lever mortice dead lock
  • 5 lever mortice dead lock

Night latch (Yale Lock) Replacements

On a wooden door you will often find a night latch, often referred to as a yale lock, fitted to the top section of your door. Keytek® Locksmiths carry a wide range of different night latches (yale locks) on board to secure your wooden door. We can change and upgrade to a:

  • Standard night latch
  • Deadlocking night latch
  • Auto dead locking night latch
  • Double locking night latch
  • British Standard night latch

Replace Patio Door Lock

One of the services that Keytek® Locksmiths offers is to replace patio door locks. This job is simpler than most people think as many patio doors or sliding doors typically have the same lock as an uPVC door. This means that a Locksmith should be able to change these locks with relative ease.

We can replace the patio door lock on:

  • Upvc patio doors
  • Wooden patio doors
  • Aluminium (metal) patio doors
  • French patio doors
  • Sliding patio doors

Rekeying is a process that involves a Locksmith changing the internal components of the lock itself. This is not something that many Locksmiths do, as it is generally more expensive for the customer and a longer process for the Locksmith to rekey than just changing the lock. It takes an extremely experienced Locksmith to successfully do this as internally either the pins or the levers will need to be changed and new keys will need to be cut to fit. Because of this we would always encourage a lock change over a rekey.

A select number of Keytek® Locksmiths are able to provide this service.

It’s always best to speak to the Locksmith when he arrives to talk about how long it will take.
