Our Lock Change & Replacement Services

There are many reasons you might need to change your locks, from moving into a new home to losing a set of keys or upgrading older locks. Whatever the reason, Keytek® can arrange a local locksmith to assess your existing lock and recommend a suitable replacement.

Our lock change and lock replacement service is available for homes and businesses throughout the UK. We can help whether you need a single front door lock changed or want to review and change locks throughout an entire property.

The locksmith will inspect the door and existing locking system before supplying and fitting an appropriate replacement. Once installed, the new lock will be checked to make sure it operates correctly, and your new keys will be handed over.

Using a professional locksmith to change locks also helps ensure the replacement is correctly sized, fitted without unnecessary damage to the door and suitable for the level of security required.

Types of Locks We Change & Replace

Different doors use different locking systems, so a lock replacement does not always mean simply swapping one cylinder for another. Our locksmiths work with many common domestic and commercial locks, including:

Lock Type

When Might It Need Changing?

Euro cylinder locks

Common on uPVC and composite doors. Cylinders can often be changed independently if keys are lost, security needs upgrading or the cylinder is damaged.

Mortice locks & deadlocks

Frequently found on timber doors. Replacement may be recommended if the lock is worn, damaged or does not meet an appropriate security standard such as BS3621.

Night latches & rim locks

Common on wooden entrance doors. These may be changed following lost keys, a house move or as part of a wider security upgrade.

uPVC & composite multipoint locks

These systems secure the door at several points. Depending on the fault or security requirement, only the cylinder may need changing rather than the complete multipoint mechanism.

Smart locks

Electronic and keyless locks may be replaced when upgrading access control, changing occupants or moving away from a traditional key-operated system.

Where appropriate, your locksmith can advise on recognised security standards and suitable options for your particular door.

uPVC, Composite & Front Door Lock Changes

If you want to change a door lock at your house, the work required will depend on both the door and its existing locking system.

Many modern uPVC and composite front doors use a multipoint locking mechanism operated by a euro cylinder. If the aim is simply to prevent an old or missing key from working, it may only be necessary to replace the cylinder. This can be quicker and less expensive than replacing the entire mechanism.

If the multipoint mechanism itself is damaged, worn or no longer operating correctly, additional repair or replacement work may be required.

Traditional timber front doors are more likely to use mortice locks, deadlocks or night latches. A locksmith can identify the existing system and recommend an appropriate front door lock change based on the door, security requirements and condition of the current hardware.

When Should You Change Your Locks?

You do not necessarily need to wait for a lock to fail before replacing it. A home lock replacement can be worthwhile whenever you are uncertain who has access to the property or the existing locks no longer provide the security you need.

Moving Home

Changing locks when moving house gives you greater control over who can access your new property. Even when all known keys are handed over, it can be difficult to know whether previous occupants, contractors, cleaners or other third parties still have copies.

For homeowners, arranging a lock change soon after completion can provide additional reassurance. Tenants should normally speak to their landlord or letting agent before making alterations to locks, particularly where this is addressed in the tenancy agreement.

Lost or Stolen Keys

If your house keys are lost or stolen and could potentially be connected to your address, changing the relevant locks can prevent those keys from being used to enter the property.

The urgency will depend on the circumstances. Keytek® offers same-day and 24-hour locksmith services where a lost keys lock change needs to be arranged quickly.

After a Break-In

Following a burglary or attempted break-in, damaged locks should be assessed as soon as the property is safe to access.

A locksmith can identify damage to the lock, cylinder, mechanism and surrounding door hardware and determine what needs replacing. Where additional damage has occurred, lock replacement may form part of wider repairs needed to secure the property.

End of Tenancy

Landlords may choose to change locks between tenancies, particularly if keys have not been returned or there is uncertainty over how many copies exist.

Whether locks need changing will depend on the circumstances and the tenancy arrangements. Where a change is required, a locksmith can replace the necessary locks while retaining appropriate access arrangements for the landlord or managing agent.

How Much Does It Cost to Change Locks in the UK?

The cost of changing locks in the UK varies because there is no single type of lock or replacement job. Replacing a standard cylinder on one door is usually a much simpler job than changing a complete multipoint locking mechanism or replacing locks throughout a property.

The final price can be influenced by the type and security rating of the replacement lock, the condition of the existing door and mechanism, the number of locks being changed, your location and whether the locksmith is required during standard hours or as an emergency callout.

Type of Lock Change

What Can Affect the Cost?

Single door lock

Lock type, security rating, cylinder size and whether additional door repairs are required

Window lock

Window type, lock design, accessibility and availability of compatible replacement parts

uPVC/composite door

Whether only the cylinder needs changing or the complete multipoint mechanism requires replacement

Front door security upgrade

Existing hardware, required security standard and type of replacement lock

Whole-house lock change

Number of external doors and windows, lock types and whether multiple security upgrades are requested

Emergency lock change

Time of attendance, location and urgency of the callout

Before work begins, ask for a clear explanation of the proposed work and price so you understand what is being replaced.

How Long Does It Take To Change a Lock?

A straightforward lock change can often be completed relatively quickly, although the exact time depends on the locking system and condition of the door.

Replacing a single euro cylinder is generally one of the simpler jobs. Mortice locks and night latches may take longer where adjustments to the door are required, while replacing a complete uPVC multipoint mechanism can be more involved.

Changing several locks across a whole property will naturally take longer than replacing one front door cylinder. The locksmith should be able to provide a clearer indication once the existing locks have been assessed.

If you require a short-notice lock change, Keytek® operates a nationwide network of locksmiths and offers same-day and 24-hour assistance, subject to local availability.
