A Locksmith is a professional who fits, repairs and changes locks and attends work surrounding security. A Locksmith will undertake various roles surrounding the security of both domestic and commercial properties and many will work as 24-hour Locksmith.

Working as a Locksmith is predominately a responsive role attending emergency calls for customers experiencing issues with their security, either being locked out because of lost keys or various parts failing on uPVC door locks or wooden doors or windows.

Will I Be Able to Set Up My Own Business After I Complete a Locksmith Course?

Once you’ve completed your Locksmithing course, then you should be competent in all areas of Locksmithing and will be able to set up your own Locksmithing business. It’s important to consider the other aspects of owning your own business or being self-employed. This includes doing marketing, accounts, website management and any other relevant business skills you’ll need to know.

Many of our students sub-contract with us, so they can build their skills and once they have more experience branch out into their own Locksmithing business.

 

Working With Keytek® Locksmith

You will be working attending customers both domestic and residential, so a good working knowledge of Locksmithing is essential. What Qualifications Do I Need To Be A Locksmith?

When working or considering working with Keytek® it is important to know we have a set of minimum requirements Engineers must meet before joining our network. Our minimum requirements ensure that we can deliver the best possible service and that all customers can be assured they will receive the high standard that Keytek® commit to. All Engineers on our network must be able to provide:

• A minimum of a level 3 in Locksmithing or equivalent (training can be provided)
• £2 million public liability insurance
• Your own stock and tooling
• Your own transport
• A valid DBS checked

However, don’t worry if you don’t meet these specific requirements, our recruitment team are always here to help any potential Engineer on achieving these standards if they are considering starting a Locksmith Career.

 

Is Being A Locksmith Profitable?

A Locksmith’s career salary is dependent on a few factors; how many hours you work, how many days a  year you are available, if you are available at night and if you have a specialism etc. The more experienced you become in Locksmithing the more jobs you will feel confident to take on, and the more jobs you take on the more money you can earn.

The average salary per year for a Locksmith working 40 hours per week is as follows*:

Entry Level Locksmiths – £16,000

Experienced Locksmith – £20,000-£25,000

Highly Experienced Locksmith – £30,000

5 Top Tips for Starting Your Locksmith Career UK

1. If It Sounds Too Good To Be True……Then It Probably Is.

Some organisations promote a ‘get rich quick’ scheme, that claim by doing a cheaper basic course you will be earning £50,000 straight away. This is not the case, as an experienced self-employed Locksmith, you can earn an unlimited amount. However, this takes time, effort, and experience.

2. Look At All Of The Training Providers

Don’t just pick the first one you see online or the cheapest. Do some reading up on the training providers you’re interested in, read reviews, and see if you can ask some existing Locksmiths that they trained with and what their experience was.

3. Think About The Hours You Will Be Available

Most Locksmiths are available Monday to Friday 9-5. Think about what you will be able to offer which means you will get more jobs. Can you work unsociable hours? Weekends? Bank holidays? Are you willing to be called out at 2 am? You will need to think about how much money you need to make each month and how this is going to fit in with family time.

4. Do Some Research Into Your Local Area.

Google ‘Locksmiths near me’ and if 100 different Locksmith companies pop up you may need to think about how far you are willing to travel. Look for a gap in the market, hours that aren’t often worked, offer an emergency response time etc.

5. Think About What Kind Of Locksmith You Want To Be.

It’s essential to know what kind of Locksmith you want to be, and what services you want to offer. These can include:
