Don’t Lose Your Keys This Summer: Why May is the Riskiest Month for Homeowners

Discover more

As the blossoms emerge and the UK finally shakes off the winter chill, most of us are thinking about beer gardens, bank holidays, and breaking out the barbecue. But our latest 5-year data study, The Forgetfulness Index, reveals a startling seasonal trend: May is officially the most dangerous month for losing your keys.

While December is the peak for locking keys inside (the “Door Slam” crisis), May is when we lose them out and about. If you feel like your memory is failing you this week, you aren’t alone—you’ve likely fallen victim to “Summer Amnesia.”

The Statistics: The “May Spike”

Our analysis of 354,363 locksmith jobs show that forgetfulness isn’t just a personality trait; it’s a seasonal phenomenon.

  • The 9.9% Peak: May and June see the highest rates of lost keys in the UK, reaching 9% of all locksmith callouts. Compare this to November, where lost key rates drop to 8%.
  • The Forgetfulness Tax: The UK spends approximately 7% more on lost keys in May than in late autumn.
  • The Sunday Scaries: Sunday is the “Capital of Forgetfulness,” with a 2% lost-key rate—nearly 20% higher than on a Monday morning.

Why May? The Science of “Summer Amnesia”

Why does a bit of sunshine make us so much more likely to lose our house keys? The data points to three specific lifestyle shifts that happen every May:

1. The “Pocket Problem”

In winter, we wear heavy coats with deep, often zipped, pockets. Our keys are “locked in” with us. In May, we transition to light jackets, shorts, and dresses with shallow pockets—or no pockets at all. Keys are frequently left in bags we don’t usually carry or slip out of flimsy pockets when we sit down in the park.

2. The Routine Reset

During the week, our brains operate on a “9-to-5 autopilot.” We know exactly where our keys are. But May is the month of the Bank Holiday. These long weekends shatter our structured routines. Without the “work-brain” structure, we enter a state of Decision Fatigue, making us nearly 20% more likely to misplace the essentials.

3. Increased “Dwell Time” Outdoors

With over 200 million attendance occasions at UK outdoor events annually, May marks the start of festival and beer garden season. Higher “dwell time” away from home plus increased movement between venues equals a higher statistical probability of a mishap.

The Hidden Risk: Secondary Keys

It’s not just the front door causing headaches this month. Our study found that 1 in 3 lost key calls in early summer aren’t for the house—they are for the Garage (30.3%) and the Letterbox (39.2%).

Because we only use these keys occasionally (to get the lawnmower out or check the post), they often live in “junk drawers” rather than on our main keyrings. Once a key is off your main set, the chance of it disappearing forever increases by 40%.

How to Beat the May Spike

Don’t become a “39-minute statistic.” Follow these data-backed tips to stay secure this summer:

  • The “Main Ring” Rule: Never leave your garage or shed keys loose. Attach them to your main house keyring. If you lose one, you’ll notice much faster.
  • The Sunday Check: Since Sunday is the peak day for loss, make it your “Key Inventory” day. Check they are in their dedicated spot before the Monday rush.
  • Install a Key Safe: With lost key call-outs costing between £80–£120 more than simple lockouts (due to mandatory lock replacements), a police-approved key safe is a one-time investment that pays for itself the first time you misplace your set.
