Freezing temperatures can cause havoc with your car and door locks, so take care of them this winter to avoid being locked out in freezing circumstances. Whether it’s a lock on your gate, a lock on your front door, or the lock on your car, all of them can be maintained in the winter to avoid difficulties! Here are some of the best ways to stop your locks from freezing!

 

What Can Freezing Temperatures Do to Your Locks?

Locks seize during cold weather because of the temperature drop and the cold air, which causes the locks to contract. If the locks contract, the keys will no longer be able to engage in the manner that they should, preventing you from using the lock.

This is more prevalent with external locks, although it does not exclude interior locks from being affected. When locks are exposed to cold air, moisture forms in the locks, which subsequently freezes and forms a coating of ice that jams the key slit, preventing the key from engaging correctly again. In cold weather, this is extremely common for car and outside door locks.

 

Door Frame Contraction

The door frame can compress in cold weather, resulting in a poor fit between the lock and the door itself. As a result, the lock does not engage properly, and doors cannot be secured, jeopardising security, or possibly preventing you from entering through this door.

On many uPVC doors, the doors can drop, and the door and hinges may need to be realigned. If this is the case, there are steps you can take to try and fix the problem; however, we would recommend you seek the assistance of a professional locksmith to ensure no breach in your home security as well as making sure no draught is present, allowing cold air to pass through into your home.

  1. Try lubricating your door lock with graphite powder or Vaseline.
  2. DO NOT use boiling water or regular WD-40 to open a frozen door lock.

The Best Ways to Stop Your Locks from Freezing

Use Graphite Powder

In freezing conditions, graphite powder is a far better and safer way to grease your lock. Because you don’t need much, this comes in a tube and is very easy to apply to your door locks. Simply dip your key in for a light coating, then gently slide it in and out of your lock to secure it. This just lubricates the lock and clears any ice inside, allowing you to operate it.

 

Cover The Lock with A Magnet

Getting a magnet is another simple technique to keep your lock from being frozen. Then, overnight, put it over the car lock. It will adhere to the lock’s metal part, preventing moisture from entering and freezing.

 

Dip Your Key in An Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizer

Squeeze some hand sanitizer onto your key and insert it into the lock. Move it back and forth a few times before attempting to turn it. The alcohol in the hand sanitizer should melt the ice sufficiently to unlock the lock.

 

Use De-Icer

Spraying de-icer directly into the lock will quickly melt any ice around it. However, this does pose a risk to the paint and material around the lock if the de-icer is not sprayed accurately.

 

Heat The Key

When your door lock is frozen, heating the key may help unlock it. You may do this with a lighter or by boiling a pot of warm water with the key in it to get it nice and hot. Wear oven mitts, tongs, and winter gloves as needed during the process for your own safety. However, to avoid causing damage to the lock, make sure the key is completely dry before inserting it!

 

Smear Your Key in Vaseline

If the lock is already frozen, smearing the key in Vaseline before inserting it will cause it to melt. This should melt through the ice and gradually lubricate the lock, preventing it from occurring again in the foreseeable future.

Can I Use WD40 To Stop My Lock Freezing?

Yes, if you use the right type. Used directly on the lock mechanism coats the metal components, preventing moisture from accumulating or pooling. However, we do not recommend using WD-40 on door locks as it can harm the lock. Other comparable products, such as WD-40 Gel Lube No Drip Formula and Silicone, can be used instead with far superior results!

After the solution has set for a few seconds, wipe away any excess solution that has accumulated on the lock. This should allow you to fit your key into the lock and protect it from future freezing temperatures in the short term.

 

What Should I Avoid When Defrosting a Lock?

Avoid Using Hot Water in The Lock

Attempting to thaw your lock with hot water or any other form of water can have negative results. Moisture can easily cause erosion if water becomes trapped inside the lock. This makes it difficult to open and close, and it may even prevent it from locking at all. In addition to causing damage to your lock, using boiling water is risky and puts yourself at risk.

 

Do Not Chip Away at The Ice with Your Key

If ice has formed inside your lock, it is critical that you do not attempt to remove it with your key. This can harm both the lock and the key. If you try to dig your key into the ice and the lock, the debris pushed into the lock may cause sections of the lock and key to chip away, causing the key to no longer match up and work with the lock. We strongly advise against doing so because it can exacerbate the condition.

To prevent your car door locks freezing there are number of things you can do to help stop it:
1. Park closer to a building or inside
2. Keep the lock clean and clear of dirt.
3. Place a magnet over the car door lock to prevent moisture getting in.

How To Open a Frozen Car Door Lock?

If you wake up to find your car door lock frozen, DO NOT try to insert the key and force it into the door, as this could damage the lock and snap your car key. Simply apply a small amount of de-icer to the lock or along the blade of the key if that is easier, and gently move your key into the lock mechanism, turn the key and hopefully this will allow you to open the car.

How To Stop Car Doors from Freezing Shut

To prevent your car door from freezing shut, you can apply lubricant to the door seals. Start by cleaning the car door seals with a damp cloth and removing any dirt or residue. You can then use a lubricant like WD-40, silicone spray, or petroleum jelly along the seal. Make sure you do not put WD-40 in the car door lock.
