How to Adjust uPVC Door Hinges – A Locksmith’s Guide

How Do You Adjust uPVC Door Hinges?

To adjust uPVC door hinges:

1. Identify whether the door has flag, butt, or T hinges.
2. Remove the hinge cover caps.
3. Use a 4mm or 5mm Allen key to adjust height, side-to-side alignment, or compression.
4. Make small adjustments (1-2 turns at a time).
5. Test the door after each adjustment.
6. Repeat until the door closes and locks correctly.

How to Check If Your uPVC Door Is Out of Alignment

1. Check the corners: Look at the corners of your doorframe. If the frame corners do not match the door corners, your door may be out of alignment.
2. Is it level? Put your spirit level on top of the door to see if it is level. If the bubble does not sit in the centre, your door tilts and does not align.
3. Check the gap: Open your door slightly and examine the gap between the lock side of the door and the frame. This gap should be identical from top to bottom.
4. Check the door for warping. Look to see if the door touches the frame at the top and bottom but has a gap in the middle. If you find a gap, you may need to replace the uPVC door

Tools Needed to Adjust a uPVC Door

To adjust a misaligned uPVC door, you will need:

1. Flat Head Screwdriver
2. Philips Head Screwdriver
3. 5mm Allen Key
4. 4mm Allen Key
5. Spirit Level

How to Adjust uPVC Door Hinges

1. Identify how your door needs adjusting (vertically, horizontally or depth) this will determine which screw you tighten / loosen.
2. Remove any cover caps. These can usually be popped off with a screwdriver.
3. Use an Allen key to adjust the screw as needed.
4. Recheck the door alignment and make sure the locking mechanism works smoothly.

Noting which hinges your door has before trying to adjust them is important, as they have slightly different steps. These will be either Flag Hinges, Butt Hinges or T-Hinges. For all types of hinges though you will require the same tools.

How to Adjust a Butt Hinge

1. Open the door and locate the two adjustment screws on the hinge.
2. Remove any cover caps.
3. Use the Allen Key to turn the screws; clockwise will tighten and count clockwise will loosen.
4. These hinges will allow limited adjustment of around 2mm.
5. Check the door is now in the correct position and there are no gaps between the top and bottom edges of the door.
6. If you still have problems with your door, consult a professional locksmith.

How to Adjust a Flag Hinge

1. Start by removing the hinge cover cap.
2. Use a 5mm Allen key to adjust the compression screw—turn clockwise to tighten the hinge or anticlockwise to loosen it.
3. To align the door vertically, adjust the top hinge by turning it backward and the bottom hinge forward.
4. Make 1-2 full rotations and then test the door before making any further adjustments.
5. If you have any remaining issues with the door, consult a locksmith.

How to Adjust a T- Hinge

1. Similar to butt hinges, locate and remove any cover caps.
2. Position the door so it’s in the desired position.
3. Use an Allen Key to make lateral and vertical adjustments as needed.

If the screws do not match the cover, tighten all the hinge screws. Replace any stripped screws with longer or larger ones.

How to Adjust a uPVC Door That Has Dropped

1. Identify the correct hinge type. This will be either a Butt Hinge, T-Hinge or Flag Hinge.
2. Remove the plastic covering screw caps.
3. Locate the vertical adjustment screw (this is typically found on the top or bottom of each hinge).
4. Use the Allen Key to either tighten or loosen the bolt, twisting in clockwise or counter clockwise retrospectively. Only make 1-2 full rotation t a time and check the doors position each time.
5. Repeat this on all the hinges till the door is no longer dropped and sits flush against the frame.
6. If you are still having issues and the door still catches on the floor, call a locksmith.

How to Prevent uPVC Becoming Unaligned

To prevent uPVC hinges from becoming misaligned you consider the following maintenance tips:

1. Clean the hinges, tracks, and mechanisms regularly to remove dirt and any debris every few months.
2. Apply a light lubricant like WD40 or graphite powder to the hinges and moving parts. Do not use WD40 in your lock.
3. Avoid slamming doors or windows shut.
4. Open and close windows regularly to prevent the mechanism from seizing up.
5. uPVC can expand in extreme temperature changes; make sure you do not try to force a door or window open in extreme heat if it is stuck.
6. Don’t attempt to warm up cold uPVC doors or window frames, as this can cause warping.
