Can Car Keys Open Other Cars?
Car keys are not unique, but they are becoming more and more unique as time goes on and car keys revolutionize into more modern technologies. It isn’t uncommon for older, traditional keys to work on other vehicles; however, since 1995, it has become a lot more common for vehicles to use a transponder key. These are keys that still contain the traditional mechanical key but also have a transponder chip inside of them that allows the car to be locked and unlocked remotely. However, even these are not unique, and there is still a possibility that your key may open another vehicle.

Physical car keys for each vehicle cannot possibly be different from one another. The manufacturer will produce a specific number of unique keys, usually only a few hundred or perhaps even up to 1,000, depending on the number of vehicles sold. Electronic protections in chipped keys make them effectively unique.
So, in theory every 1,000th or 10,000th key is exactly the same mechanically and would be able to open another car if the exact match was found.

How Does a Car Key Unlock a Specific Car?
The key transmits a code to a receiver within your car, which, upon receiving the correct code, unlocks the doors. It’s required to synchronize the receiver (vehicle) and transmitter (key).
Your key might not be able to send the signal to your vehicle if it is damaged, leaving you locked out. If this is the case, you can have a replacement key programmed by a qualified auto locksmith.
