Discover more

Everyone wants to be as secure as possible in their own home, but when it comes to renting, you might feel that your options are limited when it comes to home security. However, there are a many non-permanent, no damage options you can do to keep you safe. We will go through some of the renter friendly security solutions you can use for your rental property.

Front Door Security

Your front door is your first line of defence against any intruders. Upgrading your front door security is a must and it doesn’t have to be with permanent hardware.

  • Portable door locks– portable locks from brands such as Addalock or DoorJammer will fit around almost every existing lock and can be installed and removed quickly and without leaving damage.
  • Door reinforcement bars– these devices are pressure mounted bars that you can wedge under the doorhandle and into the floor, there are no screws or drilling required, which makes it great for renters.

Window Protection That’s Removable

Windows are another popular way for an intruder to gain entry, but they are easily defended, with non-permanent solutions.

  • Window security film– this transparent, multilayered polyester film can be applied to glass to make it stronger and prevent it from shattering. The fact that it’s clear, unnoticeable and easily removed, makes it perfect for renters.
  • Removable window locks– these have the same principle as the portable door locks. Removable devices that are clamp on locks for sliding windows/doors.

Lighting and Visibility Tricks

It’s a fact that burglars like the cover of darkness and privacy to break into properties, so lighting is a great wat to seter them.

  • Motion activated lights– these come in battery or solar powered options that stick to surfaces without drilling, so this is a good option if you don’t want to leave lasting damage.
  • Smart bulbs– smart bulbs screw in like normal bulbs and can be set to turn off and on at chosen times, to make it seem like someone is home. Hopefully stopping an intruder from attempting to break in.
  • Peel-and-stick security cameras– these are good because they don’t need to be screwed in. But you need to be careful of any damage the adhesive might cause when being removed.

Alarms and Sensors

You might think that alarms must be hardwired in, but they don’t there are plenty of renter friendly removable options.

  • Wireless alarm systems– Brands such as Ring and SimpliSafe do wireless alarms that are renter friendly and are peel and stick, meaning no screws.
  • Personal safety alarms– these are small personal devices, that can be kept by the bed and easily taken with you when moving around the house. The emit a very loud noise when the pin is pulled, the idea being it will scare away any threat.
  • Contact alarms– these are sensors that can be stuck to windows and doors that will make a noise when opened. They are stick on, so shouldn’t leave any permanent changes to a rental property.
