Lock Definition: Understanding How Locks Work
The Oxford dictionary defines a lock as a mechanism that keeps a door, window, lid or container fastened, usually operated by a key. It has a few other meanings too of course, including a short section of a canal, or to lock an electronic device such as a mobile phone or computer.
How Do Locks Work?
Locks operated by a key work with a series of pins that are pushed down with a spring and vary in length. Once the correct key is inserted into the lock, the groves of the unique key line up with the correct lock and it can then be opened.
Locks for the Home
Focusing on locks with keys for the home, there are a huge number of different locks that have a different number of purposes. There are 8 types of locks that are found on a door in a home, some are more secure than others and dependant on your door type and purpose determines which one is used.
The lock you will need on your external doors need to be much more efficient than a lock on your bathroom door for example, which is why there are many variations of locks on the market. An external door lock needs to be strong enough to protect your home from burglaries. A mortice lock or euro cylinder are the most common for an external door. A mortice lock is most commonly found on a wooden door and a euro cylinder is found on a uPVC door. Key Stuck in the Lock?
Has your key got stuck in the lock? If your key has become stuck in the lock, carefully return the key to the position it started in and gently prise it away from the lock. If that hasn’t worked, don’t force the key as you may cause more damage. Maybe your key is broken in the lock or key has snapped in the lock? Unless you have a broken key extractor tool it is best left to the professionals. Make sure you save your broken key if it has broken in two halves as the Locksmith may be able to cut a new key from that for you.
