Should you Lock your Bedroom Door at Night?

Locking your bedroom door can help to make you feel more secure but there are a few things that you should consider. If you have young children in the home, locking the door may delay you leaving should an emergency arise, likewise in the event of a fire it can make escaping more difficult.

If you have children under the age of 11 in your home then you should NEVER lock their bedroom doors, this is in case there is an emergency such as fire, or if one falls out of bed, or having another form of accident in their bedroom.

Shutting your bedroom door

There are some benefits of shutting (but not locking) your bedroom door at night;

  • Stop the spread of fire
  • Block out noises that could disturb sleep
  • More secure if someone breaks in

So while we wouldn’t recommend locking your bedroom door, you may want to think about shutting it completely when sleeping.
